EAZA meets WAZA’s Population Management Goal

... a global benchmark in professional and effective population management

We are honoured to announce that EAZA has met the 2027 Population Management Goal set by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). We congratulate colleagues at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in North America and the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) in Australasia for the same accomplishment.

The WAZA 27PMG is a global benchmark confirming that the population management frameworks of associations like EAZA contribute to advancing professional and effective management of animal populations. The Goal supports Target 4 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to halt species extinction and protect genetic diversity.

Experts from around the world evaluated EAZA’s population management framework, with the EAZA Ex Situ Programmes (EEPs) at its core. This assessment has confirmed that EAZA meets the requirements of the WAZA 27PMG.

"Achieving this target is a celebration for EAZA and its Members. It will further promote collaboration among leading zoos and aquariums, as well as their associations, ultimately leading to a greater contribution to conservation from our community." Says Raymond van der Meer, EAZA’s Director of Conservation and Population Management.

EAZA has previously achieved the WAZA 2023 Animal Welfare Goal, with the EAZA Accreditation Programme being amongst the first to meet WAZA’s global benchmark for Animal Welfare Evaluation Processes. Meeting the WAZA 27PMG represents another significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to conservation, animal welfare, and global collaboration.

Raymond van der Meer continues, "The WAZA 27 PMG reinforces our work at a global level, and through collaboration within existing frameworks like CITES and CBD, we can strengthen our impact in species conservation and establish ourselves even better as credible leaders in welfare and ex situ conservation."
