EAZA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2024

8-12 October #EAZA2024

Welcome to Leipzig

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are currently living with a double global crisis and are facing one of the greatest challenges of our time: understanding the phenomena of climate change and the loss of biodiversity as causally linked effects with far-reaching impacts. While climate change is omnipresent in the public eye, the perceived loss of biodiversity has taken a subordinate position. It is our obligation as a zoo community to join forces with a holistic approach and to achieve more effective synergy effects in the fields of climate change and species conservation in order to preserve global biodiversity in times of climate change.

We are very proud to be hosting the EAZA Annual Conference in October 2024. We cordially invite you to join us in our unique city to discuss issues of biodiversity, species conservation and animal husbandry with us and to come up with some novel solutions.

I look forward to an intensive and constructive exchange of ideas with you.

Yours

Prof. Jörg Junhold
Director of Zoo Leipzig

Workshop: Quality of Life Assessment

Quality of Life Assessment (QoL)

There has been a significant shift in the perception of animal welfare in captive animals over the past three decades, with the Five Domains model being a critical turning point in establishing the fundamental requirements needed to ensure that welfare needs are met. There is however, the necessity to conduct more in-depth assessment of the welfare of specific individuals for which there is an ongoing concern about their health or behaviour.

In response, a Quality of Life Assessment (QoL) was produced by BIAZA in 2022 to help members objectively analyse and track the welfare of individual animals. The process involves data gathering of historical information from ZIMS for medical and behavioural studies, along with live behavioural and enclosure use observations to monitor 24-hour activity of the focal animal. All information is then reviewed during a roundtable discussion where the QoL template is completed and mitigating actions defined.

This workshop will include hands-on data collection from a range of sources such as videos and husbandry notes, and participants will be involved in completing a QoL assessment. It aims to help staff fully understand the QoL process and how it can influence positive welfare changes across a variety of species.

Date: Tuesday 8 October, 9am - 5pm

Tutors: Will be announced soon

Cost: EAZA Members €170, non-EAZA €220

Event venue

The venue location of the EAZA Annual Conference 2024 is the Kongreshalle am Zoo Leipzig.

KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig
Pfaffendorfer Straße 31
04105 Leipzig

The KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig, built in 1900, receives its guests with all the charm and splendor of a bygone age. Historic architecture and modern features combine to create an event venue that unites tradition with progress. History comes alive in this extensively renovated building. Its meeting halls and rooms, of various styles and sizes, give every conference and congress its unique, unmatched character. The building’s atmosphere excites the senses: lofty halls, generous conference spaces, and small rooms offer ideal and exciting possibilities for meetings and events right in the heart of the City of Leipzig.

Opened in 1900 as the ballroom of the Zoo Leipzig , the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig was the center of the social life of the fast-growing city at that time. After the Second World War, it was home to the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra. Over time, the building has seen several reconstructions and extensions before it became dilapidated and had to be closed down in 1988. In 2009, the City of Leipzig favored a fundamental refurbishment, which opened up the opportunity to use the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig as a modern meeting venue. Now run by the Leipzig Fair, who are highly experienced experts in the congress business, the first events were hosted in 2015.

The venue features 15 halls and rooms that can seat between 10 and 1,200 people. The juxtaposition of different styles – from Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Historicist to contemporary architecture – reflects the colorful history and gives the building a particular ambiance. The entire facility is equipped with state-of-the-art AV and media systems. The “Expo” area offers 800 square meters of exhibition space. Being located very much in the center of Leipzig, the accessibility of the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig is another asset.
